Verizon announced that it is looking to eliminate about 8,000 jobs. By all accounts, it will require a layoff, including some employees at Verizon Business.
Layoffs at VZB aren't new. But this will be the first time that some employees are in the union and covered by a union contract.
The contract has provisions that require VZB management to:
-- Offer incentives for early retirement
-- Get rid of contractors before forcing someone to the street
-- Respect seniority during a layoff
That said, there are a lot of details that are still unresolved. For example: Seniority by title? By work group? By city? The contract isn't clear on that, and it will have to be worked out.
There is only two things for certain.
One, by being united in the union, members will have a voice in the process, and
Two, whatever the company says today, it will be different tomorrow.
